They are inconsistent; after obtaining their prospects email address they forget to train their prospects to actually open their emails which is dire to any email marketing campaign.  You can avoid this by setting up an email course or send a bi weekly newsletter.  You should always be consistent and stay in front of your readers.
2. They often send “free promotions” too often, this is common with newer marketers because they want to build up this list fast so they set up advertisement swaps with other marketers in the same or very similar niches/markets.  This in return bombards the new email list subscribers with an overload of emails which can come across as “spammy” and will inevitably reduce the chances of the prospects opening your future emails.  You can prevent this approach by being stratigic and consistent as I mentioned before.  Be consistant and provide real information “value” to your readers so they will be loyal readers and great long term customers.
3. They often only try and sell to their lists.  Please do not do this even though the subscriber has opted into your list doesn’t meant that they want to see promotion after promotion from you.  Like I mentioned in the previous point don’t over do it with the promotions to be successful with marketing online you need loyal readers that take your recommendations seriously.

So if you are starting out with internet marketing and you want to create a steady growing and highly responsive subscriber list you simply need to be consistant, give great information, only promote programs that you have actually used and highly recommend.
